Moses encourages parents to teach their children about God’s love.
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (NIV)
Fathers must take advantage of the child-raising years to school their children on subjects that matter. This training begins in the everyday tasks: at mealtimes, commuting to soccer practice or dance class, at bedtime, etc. Teachable moments result from living an “others-centered” life.
One family I know involves their children in public service by baby-sitting at church when there are activities that involve the adults; helping in the church kitchen during funeral dinners; reading stories to students at a local preschool. Other children I know, go to the homes of shut-ins and older adults to do spring yard clean-up and rake leaves in the fall. Our American culture has turned away from the commands of God; a counter-cultural return to those truths begins with a father training his children and being personally involved in their lives.
