“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

It’s sad to know that so many people believe that because they are “a good person,” they will enter into heaven. The truth is that nobody is justified by their deeds because everyone has done wrong. Thankfully, it isn’t your own doing that grants us salvation, but the grace of God. During your time on earth, it’s your mission to live a life that is honorable before the Lord, and to help bring as many people as possible to Christ. But never forget that no matter how clean or how tarnished your life has been, your salvation isn’t a wage, but a gift from God.

“So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”

Doing the wrong thing isn’t always obvious, but it’s a choice every time. Sin isn’t always found in what you do, but sometimes what you don’t do as well. If in your heart you know what the right thing to do is, it’s your responsibility to carry it out. We’re told in the Word to take every opportunity to help those in need, and to put our best efforts toward making peace and spreading the gospel. In this corrupt world, there’s no shortage of chances to do just that.

1 Corinthians 10:13
“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

There is no adversity that is too much for God to handle. With sin running rampant in our world, temptation to do wrong is everywhere. Christ knows this, because not only was He subject to the wrath of evil during His time on earth, but He was also assailed with every kind of temptation known to us. Even Satan himself tried to persuade Jesus to sin. In this life you will face temptations, but God will always provide a way of escape, so that you can endure your trials and keep your heart set on Him.

James 4:7
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

The Word tells us that our hearts can only serve one master. Sin nature will constantly cause us to stumble, but if in your heart you are striving to serve and obey the Lord, He will draw near to you. Likewise, when you keep your eyes on Him and resists the temptations that sin throws at you, the devil will flee from you. Temptation is persistent, but God is an everlasting stronghold, and the rock on which you stand. By submitting to the Lord, you are putting His will above all others, and showing the enemy exactly who your heart belongs to.

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Christ’s sacrifice changed everything. No longer are we justified by our works, but by faith in the Son of God. It’s not the good things we do that will get us into heaven, it’s our belief; but obedience, justice and kindness are all byproducts of a strong and active faith. When you are saved by Christ’s blood, and the Holy Spirit enters your heart, the person you were is radically transformed. As Christ’s representative, and as a vessel for the Spirit to work through, always set your heart on the Lord’s will, and walk humbly with your God.

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.”

The world was broken long ago and corrupted by sin and death. God’s creation was twisted into a nightmare compared to the original world He made for us. When it seems like there are so many reasons to be miserable, remember that the battle has already been won, and we know how the story ends. You have been redeemed by Christ, and no matter what happens in this life, you have a one-way ticket to eternal life in Heaven. How incredible is it that we live in a universe created by the one true God, who loves us and gave His only son to save us! Rejoice in the Lord always, and again we say, rejoice!
