“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

It’s true that the goal of God’s plan won’t always be “to make you happy.” His word says that He will allow you to face trials in this life, and sometimes force you out of your comfort zone. But don’t make the mistake of believing that the Lord isn’t joyful when His children are joyful. If you’re under the impression that a life lived for God is one of misery and boredom, you’re dead wrong. Joy is one of the fruits of the spirit, along with love, peace, and many more. God is delighted when His children serve Him joyfully, and for a willing and obedient heart, the Father pours out His blessings.

The Bible often describes the life we live as “the blink of an eye” compared to the beautiful eternity waiting for us. Even those who don’t believe will agree that life is short. Though it might not be perfect and without sin anymore, life was meant to be enjoyed. Counting God’s blessings and finding joy in the path He has set you on are essential parts of living a joyful life. When you live in obedience to the Father, the joy He gives you will not only be clear to you, but to the hearts of everyone around you.

The Lord holds the world in His hands, and every day of our lives is a blessing from Him. From the beginning of time till today, and until the end of the world, He knows what every single day will bring. He has woven His plan into your life and into the lives of the people around you, so that each, and every moment has purpose. Whatever happens, good or bad, this is the day the Lord has made. With our Father in charge, what reason do we have not to rejoice and be glad in it?

Mercy isn’t something that’s earned. If it was, you and I would certainly be doomed to an eternity separated from God. Mercy is a gift that demands nothing in return, and Christ offered it to everyone. In every situation we are called to show mercy, even if it isn’t asked for. Remember the mercy that you were shown by the Son of God, in that while you were still a sinner, He spilt His blood for you. We can never repay our own debts, but we can strive to forgive the debts of others.

It’s easy to hold a grudge, but it can be hard to move on. Chances are you’ve had trouble forgiving someone before, or perhaps you even known someone struggling to forgive you. The reality is that nobody, whether friends, family or even a spouse, will ever have a perfect record. We will all let each other down at some point because sin is wired into our nature. It’s reacting to the sins of others with the love of Christ that separates God’s children from the rest of the world.

Some things are easier to forgive than others. People make mistakes, and oftentimes if you put yourself in their shoes, you can understand why they made the choices they did. But sometimes there is no excuse; evil exists in every corner of our fallen world, and some people’s actions can’t be defended or justified. But no matter the sin, God loves them, just as He loves you, and He wants to spend eternity with them. As a witness for Christ, you could be the one that plants the seed in their life which allows them to be saved… if you can show the same mercy Jesus did and forgive them.
