Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Have you ever met someone and just known they were a believer, even before they told you? When someone commits their life to Christ, His Spirit begins living through them, producing “fruit” like love, joy and peace. The fruit of the Spirit is obvious, and it’s the evidence that someone has truly given their life to the Lord. You might not always feel like you’re producing much fruit; sometimes you might doubt whether the Holy Spirit is inside you at all. But if your desire and prayer is for the Spirit to live in you, your willing heart is all that God needs to change you for the better.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

When Christ died for the sins of the world, the veil separating God from mankind was torn in two. Now God could be with His children right here on earth, in the form of the Holy Spirit. Jesus described the Holy Spirit as a helper; one that would guide His followers, change them, and give them the power and bravery they would need to spread the gospel to the world. And that same Holy Spirit is still given to anyone who puts their faith in Jesus, even today! It’s a gift to those who have repented, whose desire is to be more like Christ here on earth. The Lord has given you and I a mission: to be lights in a dark world. And that light isn’t our own… it’s the Spirit of God.

Satan didn’t tempt Jesus just any day; he chose to attack when the Son of God was at His most vulnerable. He was hungry, weary, and lonely after spending forty days fasting in the wilderness, and the devil seized this opportunity to attempt to break the sinless Messiah. He tempted Jesus with the promise of food, power, and all the kingdoms of the world, but Christ didn’t cave in. Instead, He cut down Satan’s temptations using scripture. For every clever whisper from the enemy, Jesus had a verse ready to expose the lies, and the same scriptures He fought with are in your arsenal too.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

When was the last time you took a deep dive into the scriptures? Truth is truth, and God’s word endures. The words written and spoken by man will inevitably be forgotten as time goes on, but the words God wrote through human authors have, and will, stand the test of time. The commandments and teachings sealed in the Bible are as important for you today as they were when they were written. Wisdom doesn’t corrode as it ages, and neither does the character of God. Everything else may crumble, but the words of the Lord will never become irrelevant.

Lots of people heard Jesus, but the people who benefited from His words are the ones who acted on them. He told His children to love their enemies, and to do good to those who hate you. To seek first the kingdom of God and store up treasures in Heaven. To be salt and light on the earth and spread His message of salvation to all corners of the world. These things you’ve heard, but even the wisest words can fall on dull ears. If you hear Christ’s words and make them the foundation of your everyday life, you will be, in His own words, like a wise man who built his house upon solid ground.

Romans 15:4
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Christ’s birth, death and resurrection were prophesied throughout the Old Testament, and recorded for you in the New Testament. Even though He changed mankind’s relationship with God forever, that doesn’t mean we should ignore the scriptures that came before Him. The Old Testament tells the story of creation, the fall of paradise, and the chosen people that the Lord would use to save the world. It shows us God’s character, including His love, His mercy, and His wrath. What was written before Jesus’ time is incredibly important because it provides the context you and I need in order to properly understand who Christ is and what He did for you.
