King Solomon writes of God’s gift of conscience.
Proverbs 20:27 The spirit of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner-most parts of his being. (NASB)
Ever wonder if your “conscience” is anything more than a literary figure of speech? Is there something inside all of humanity, made in the image of God, that innately reminds you of the right when you’re tempted to do wrong; and gives you peace and joy when you do good? I believe the answer is “Yes”.
In the language of the King James Version of Scripture our conscience is called, “the candle of the Lord”. As a Christ-follower, the intensity of this light, can be amplified by God’s Spirit living within; reading the written Word of God; and praying to the Creator. On the other hand, you can dim the light of the Lord by ignoring its influence.
Think of a lighthouse warning ships from the peril of the rocky shore – the glass around the light has to be clean for the light to shine brightly. The payoff for paying attention to the “still, small voice” of conscience is that it reveals not only when we please God outwardly, but the conscience sheds light on our hidden thoughts and motives – before they become acts!
