Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

There is no book, no teaching, and no truth like what you can find in the Bible. It’s no accident that it’s the world’s most-read book; it is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It was written by man, but authored by God, and over the ages it has changed hearts, saved kingdoms, and been the foundation of the greatest countries on earth. If you haven’t made a habit of reading the Word, you’re missing out on one of the Father’s greatest gifts to man. It answers your questions, comforts you during hard times, and reveals page by page the character of God.

John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

This verse brings to mind dramatic scenes where a selfless hero sacrifices himself to save someone’s life. It’s the greatest act of love, but rarely do you see that kind of love and boldness demonstrated in today’s world. But even if you don’t jump in front of a bus to save someone, you can still “lay down your life” by putting others first. Giving up your time, energy and personal wants for the sake of someone else is a form of self-sacrifice. It’s that kind of love that’s hard to come by, but with God’s help and the example of Jesus, you can possess it.

Romans 13:10
Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

God gave His people ten commandments, but Jesus summed them up in only two. The first and foremost is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, and the second is to love your neighbor as yourself. When you treat others with love, commandments about lying, stealing, jealousy and strife all fall into place. The entire law is fulfilled when you love God and His children… each and every one of them.

1 John 4:19
We love because he first loved us.

Love itself comes from God; it’s a part of His nature as a good and perfect God to love His children with infinite passion. He was the first being ever to love, and He demonstrated the depths of His love by sacrificing His one and only Son to save us from the crimes we committed against Him. The reason God’s people show love to others isn’t because it’s natural, but because of the supernatural love that we’ve seen. Before you even knew God, He loved you first.

1 John 4:7
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God.

No one taught you to throw tantrums, steal toys, or headbutt your playmates when you were three years old. Being selfish is natural, and this is clear from an early age. That’s why love, especially the love that comes from a relationship with Christ, is so powerful. It defies human nature because love comes from God. If you’ve accepted Jesus, you understand that His sacrifice was the greatest act of love; so by all means show some of that love to one another.

1 Corinthians 13:4
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant.

Love exhibits patience and kindness, whether or not it has been earned. It isn’t envious, and it doesn’t boast. Nor it is arrogant because love isn’t self-centered. Love isn’t about what you can get, but rather, what you can give to someone else. It’s about making the person you love your first priority, even when it doesn’t benefit you. Our culture twists the definition of love into an emotion that can come and go, but the bible makes the truth clear: love is a choice.
