Satan didn’t tempt Jesus just any day; he chose to attack when the Son of God was at His most vulnerable. He was hungry, weary, and lonely after spending forty days fasting in the wilderness, and the devil seized this opportunity to attempt to break the sinless Messiah. He tempted Jesus with the promise of food, power, and all the kingdoms of the world, but Christ didn’t cave in. Instead, He cut down Satan’s temptations using scripture. For every clever whisper from the enemy, Jesus had a verse ready to expose the lies, and the same scriptures He fought with are in your arsenal too.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

When was the last time you took a deep dive into the scriptures? Truth is truth, and God’s word endures. The words written and spoken by man will inevitably be forgotten as time goes on, but the words God wrote through human authors have, and will, stand the test of time. The commandments and teachings sealed in the Bible are as important for you today as they were when they were written. Wisdom doesn’t corrode as it ages, and neither does the character of God. Everything else may crumble, but the words of the Lord will never become irrelevant.

Lots of people heard Jesus, but the people who benefited from His words are the ones who acted on them. He told His children to love their enemies, and to do good to those who hate you. To seek first the kingdom of God and store up treasures in Heaven. To be salt and light on the earth and spread His message of salvation to all corners of the world. These things you’ve heard, but even the wisest words can fall on dull ears. If you hear Christ’s words and make them the foundation of your everyday life, you will be, in His own words, like a wise man who built his house upon solid ground.

For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

Christ’s birth, death and resurrection were prophesied throughout the Old Testament, and recorded for you in the New Testament. Even though He changed mankind’s relationship with God forever, that doesn’t mean we should ignore the scriptures that came before Him. The Old Testament tells the story of creation, the fall of paradise, and the chosen people that the Lord would use to save the world. It shows us God’s character, including His love, His mercy, and His wrath. What was written before Jesus’ time is incredibly important because it provides the context you and I need in order to properly understand who Christ is and what He did for you.

The Bible is important, and that should go without saying. Everything we know about God, His son Jesus, the meaning of life, and the life that awaits can all be found within. It’s the Word of God, the most-read book of all time, and it has changed more lives than any other writing on the planet. The Bible is full of truth, and no matter what you’re going through, I guarantee that the Lord has something for you in its pages. The Word of God is alive, sharper than any blade, piercing the conscience, dividing right from wrong, and preserving not only the Lord’s commands, but the story of what He did for you, and what you must do to be saved.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Sometimes, I don’t even know what to pray for. I can know what I want, but often I don’t know what’s best. None of us know what the Lord’s plan is, or how He’s going to move… but when you pray, the Holy Spirit prays with you. God hears all of your prayers, and the Word says He delights in answering them, even if it’s not the way you expected. When you don’t know what to pray for, or even how to pray, simply humble yourself before the God who can do anything. The Holy Spirit lives inside you and knows all that you ask for.
